My mother, in her great wisdom, was not fond of my brothers and I eating sugar. Relative to most of my childhood friends I was on a low sugar and low salt diet. Over a number of years my mother was the editor of various pharmaceutical and medical journals in New Zealand. I think it was a combination of her intelligence, common sense, and exposure to medical studies that led her to keep us on a relatively low sugar and whole food diet. Fast food was not part of our diet. Ice cream was a special treat we’d have a little of from time-to-time. Soda or soft-drinks were only ever in our house for the occasional birthday (I guess she didn’t want to start a riot with a bunch of sugar hungry children on our birthdays).

Later, in my mid-teens, I got to know a number of naturopaths. They were also of the opinion that sugar is toxic and to minimise how much one eats of it. Needless to say, relative to most of my pairs in “western” society I’ve lived a pretty low-sugar lifestyle. I don’t think I’ve ever purchased white sugar when shopping. I’ve viewed it as poison.

Here’s a video from Dr. Robert Lustig, M.D. It’s called The Bitter Truth. Please watch it and learn.
