State of the collective ego and anti-social networks

Well… I had an interesting experience last night. One which I will share with you. Be warned, it is sexually explicit in nature. Although perhaps not in the way you are thinking.

What we will touch on is one aspect of anti-social networking. [P.S. (July 2012) This article predates Facebook, yet is related to the topic of anti-social networks].

Last night I undertook a little spontaneous research that led to some rather eye-penning discoveries regarding the current state of the collective ego.

Last night I was trying to find a particular plug-in for Photoshop. I have a demo of it and the company that makes it has vanished.

I found this peer-to-peer sharing program called WarezP2P a few days ago and so I took a look on it to see if I could find the file I wanted on there. — No luck.

Before going off-line I clicked on the CHAT button to see what that was about.

What appeared was a long list of “channels” (like chat sessions or areas) where people are chatting. I noticed that essentially all the ones with more than just a few people in them where about sex in one way or another (each channel had a name). I joined a few of these channels to see just what it is people are doing there—in my mind a text chatting system has to be one of the last places a person will actually have a true sexual experience, aside from perhaps masturbating whilst participating in the chat session, but then any man or woman is quite capable of that without the aid of a chat session. Needless to say, I was curious what this sex related chats where about.

Anyway… following my curiosity I sat a watched what was going on for perhaps 2-3 minutes. Here’s a transcript of a couple of minutes of discussion:

(interspersed throughout this are lines that say when someone has joined or parted the chat channel. I took most of them out as there was as many of those as there were lines with discussion on them)

Now, I imagine most people reading this would almost need a translator to understand most of it.
“cam” is an online camera. “cam to cam” is connecting online with each person having a camera [in the way we are now familiar on services like Skype — added July 2012].
“chatting private” or “private me” or “DC” or “PC” is a referring to having a private one-to-one chat session (which is again, just lines of text going in one by one).
Something like “16/F/uk” means 16 years old, female, and in the UK.
“sup motha fukaz” basically means “what is up, mother fuckers”… this is apparently the modern-day equivalent of saying, “Hello… what’s happening around here friends?”

I’ll leave it to you to figure out the rest.

A few things stand out for me in this exploration of internet chat culture:

1. I am reminded of George Orwell’s book 1984. One of the concepts he portrayed in there was the reductionism of the English language down to very basic words. The idea being that being limited a person’ linguistic ability you reduced their capacity to reason and think — as we perform these takes using language internally. The other effect is that it limited what people could express and communicate.
2. Most of the chat channels (each has a name assigned to it by the person that starts it) are related to sex, sexual preferences, pornography, fucking, and things of that nature. There are many that don’t have names associated with sex, yet I found that most of what people are talking about in them are in fact along much the same lines.
   It brings to question, what is this obsession with sex?
   What I am seeing is the product of a society that has suppressed sexuality and authentic relationship between people to such a degree that our youth (most of the people on these chat things are more than likely under 20… a few under 25) really have no wholesome way to deal with this element of the human experience. Much the same has resulted from our suppression of drugs and psychoactive substances.
3. Youth are saying and expressing things within this context—one that is faceless, impersonal, and completely devoid of accountability—that I am sure they wouldn’t ordinarily voice in public to a group of strangers. What does this tell us?

I think, overall, this experience has given me some insight into the degree to which the human collective is degenerating. I don’t see that as “good” or “bad”… it is still all just part of the collective story. What astounds me is that this is the state of mind of a significant portion of the youth in the internet enabled world… and yet this is the product of the collective dream that most of humanity is living out and striving for. The way most people are choosing to live life… the things we strive for… the “progress” of society that society believes is so valuable is resulting in this sort of madness (along with all the other mad things going on in the world).

I trust this may give you some additional motivation to let the world go and set yourself free for the sake of all Beings… including the beautiful people with no better way to express their radiant essence but through the means just outlined above.

How beautiful that this is all a dream—from which that which I AM shall awaken.

May that awakening extend into your Mind in each and every moment and may that extend out into the world in unimaginable ways. Only through that shall this world be transformed into the Kingdom of Heaven that it is.
