Since early 2009 I’ve been telling clients and workshop attendees they can grow their own fresh air. The original inspiration for this idea came from the following video of Kamel Meattle, talking at Ted.com in Feb 2009. Here’s that video:

The plants needed to grow your own fresh air

The three plants referred to in this video are:

“The living-room plant” – Areca Palm – Chrysalidocarpus lutescens –  http://plantsrescue.com/category/chrysalidocarpus-lutescens/

The bedroom plant – Mother-in-law’s tongue – Sansevieria trifasciata – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sansevieria_trifasciata

The Specialist Place – Money Plant – Epipremnum aureum – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epipremnum_aureum

There are at least 50 other plants reported to work well which were also identified during the NASA studies.

Based on my research into the work of Bill Wolverton (the guy that worked for NASA and did much of the studies on using plants for air purification) the best results are obtained when the plants are grown in non-soil media, such as the expanded clay pebbles commonly used for hydroponics. In the USA you can easily locate a hydroponics store using the search system on this site: http://www.hydrofarm.com/wheretobuy.php – Hydrofarm produces various hydroponics products that most hydroponics stores are likely to carry, so it’s an easy way to find a shop in your area.

One brand of this baked clay based media is Hydroton. You can find this in many indoor gardening stores, and even on Amazon.com. Another online supplier in the USA is https://www.planetnatural.com

Here is another video that explains in more detail how the plants remove toxins from your indoor environment and ways to go about making use of this:
